If you're here, you probably fall into one of two camps: you're dreaming about building your own home someday, or you're knee-deep in the process right now and looking for someone who's been through it to tell you the truth. Either way — welcome. You're in the right place.

I built a custom home in the Mojave desert, and this blog is where I'm unpacking everything that went into it. Not as a live build diary (I'm past that stage), but as a room-by-room, decision-by-decision retrospective. What I chose, why I chose it, what I'd do again in a heartbeat, and what I'd politely set on fire if given the chance.

Why "The Rock Ridge House"

The name isn't a metaphor I'm overexplaining — it's just where the house sits, and it felt right. Solid. A little stubborn, like everything about building in the desert tends to be.

What you'll find here

This blog is going to walk through the build in overview form, organized by room and by phase rather than by date, because nobody needs to relive my Tuesday-by-Tuesday scheduling drama. Expect posts on:

• The exterior and how a home holds its own against desert light and heat

• Kitchen and interior fixture choices, and the reasoning (or lack thereof) behind them

• Materials that were worth the splurge, and materials that were a waste of money

• Eventually, decor — once the bones of the house are fully covered

I'm also building out a shop of digital resources: printable planning templates, budget trackers, material checklists, and possibly an ebook walking through what to actually expect during a custom build, versus what people tell you to expect. If you've ever nodded along to build advice that clearly came from someone who's never lived through one, you know the difference matters.
